ASB Report August 2019:
September 5th, 2019
Historian Commissioner
Alyssa Jones
Position Assessment:
As historian commissioner for this school year, I began the school year during core camp when I took extensive photos and videos to catalog the experience. With every experience we had together, I made sure to follow closely with my camera to record all aspects of the trip for as many Ripon High Leadership Officers I could find. I continued this into the school year, with my next assignment beginning at club rush. It was here where I recorded photos of people serving food for our classmates, and snapped more pictures of a few leaders running club rush booths and t-shirt sales.
Standing Committee:
My standing committee was updating and ensuring the shadow boxes on admin building look updated and nice throughout the entire year. For this, I looked at the current state of the shadow boxes and noted how I could improve upon them. I then made a list of things I could do to fix them and am currently beginning the process of updating them to fit the current needs of Ripon high.
Special Committee:
I was put on the Black Light Rally Special Committee this year and overall we were led by Natalie Betoshana who did a marvelous job in creating a rally that truly captivated all in the audience. We were responsible for setting up and cleaning up after the entire rally. This included: setting up the black lights, decorating the gym with streamers and tape, fixing the lighting, setting up speakers, hooking up the technology, decorating the keyboard, and telling Seniors where to go in the foyer. In the end, our efforts truly made a fun and enticing dance the entire student body was excited to be a part of.
This year, I am concerned with the extra level of planning we must do since we have lost the ability to use Amazon prime. This means every event we take on we must account for every small thing we do at least 2 weeks in advance, and at the speed we work as an ASB team I can see how we can become overwhelmed and annoyed at this new rule.
I am so excited to work with an amazing and close class as we get to have this year. Ever since core camp, this group has been completely bonded and accepting of everyone else regardless of the differences we may have between each other. I also like how we are utilizing Brene Brown in the classroom because her words allow me to explore a new level of self growth that was unable to be attained before my experience with leadership began.
Change:
If I could change anything, I would make the room we work in smaller because someone had brought up a good point earlier that it is harder to bond with one another when we are spaced out into different tables every day. I believe if we were closer together and had the opportunity to see all our different faces every day, we would then be able to form a tighter bond as an ASB team and thus be able to work together as a team better.
Impact:
My impact on my school so far is getting to where I would like it to be. Having been a founder of 3 different clubs here at Ripon High, I have helped open up new ways for people on campus to get involved. The multicultural Club impacts Ripon High because it gives our school an outlet to express any concerns regarding race and diversity, and also impacts the community because we do fundraisers that help give back to those in need. For example, we created care cards for our local homeless shelter to help combat the dehumanization that homeless people feel on the streets, and conducted a neighborhood wide food drive to support our local salvation army last January. The Scrubs Club this year also impacts the school because it gives the many students who want to go into a healthcare career a window into what life may be like for them and how to achieve these dreams. Overall, I still have yet to impact the world greatly, but I am starting a new fundraiser this year for multicultural club to help raise money to build a school in Kenya. When this succeeds, I would have taken more positive steps to see an impact in the world today but would yet to have seen the impact that I know I can make.

September and October Meeting:
Position Assessment:
As historian commissioner I have been taking extensive videos and pictures at all of our events such as the homecoming set up, front of the school set up, lip sinks, rallies, and any other leadership involvement. I have consolidated all these pictures into a folder on my phone for me to access later and refer to when making the scrapbook. The scrapbook process has begun and I have retrieved the login information from Morty to begin assembling pages and I have begun to place the pictures together.
Standing Committee:
My standing committee is shadow box. So far, I have not been able to start working on it because the key way MIA, but Morty recently found the key and I have begun to assemble a committee to help with the November Gratitude spread. I chose this spread not only for the several gratitude themed things we do in November, but because the fall is always known as the giving season and it is the perfect season to show the school the power of gratitude. Measurements for the display will be taken next week when I get a measuring tape and the committee can help.
Special Committee:
My special committee was the beautiful movement and gratitude movement video. For the beautiful movement, I recorded and told my best friend Nikki how much I love and appreciate her in my life. This beautiful movement really helped lighten her day which was already rough and I really felt significantly better after the event was over. I also participated in the gratitude video, which was not part of my committee but part of the joint beautiful movement video, which also helped me spread gratitude to those I love.
Concern:
One concern I have for the school year is overall involvement. As we do these fundraisers, like tri tip, I am concerned that people, including myself, will get burnt out with all the leadership events and not put in their best effort to making the fundraisers the best they can be. For this, I think having a fun out of school activity or even a rest week would help combat this fatigue in any way possible.
Looking forward to:
I am looking forward to the Completion of the shadow box because the old displays have been up for more than a year and I am looking forward to completing my first school project for leadership. I am excited to head this shadow box committee to make the shadow boxes something students at the school look forward to and get excited to see every month. I am also looking forward to a few events for both the multicultural club and the scrubs club this year which are coming up soon.
Positive Comment:
My positive comment is for Natalie Betoshana because she showed exemplary work in her accomplishment of the black out rally. Though she never made it seem to many people, her drive and commemoration was one to be admired by those around her. I can't wait to see what she puts on in the future because whatever she chooses, I know it will be amazing.
So far, my impact on campus has overall been a bit limited due to many other commitments I have ran into, but I have recently began to get back involved in club activities and becoming a more productive person overall. Soon, I will have completed a día de los muertos event for the multicultural club which will provide a platform for people to learn about Hispanic heritage and other cultures around the world.
November and December:
Historian Position Assessment:
As historian, I have been taking and collecting various photos and videos of Warm and Fuzzy week, rallies, football game setups, and many other occasions. Along with taking pictures, my job began to encompass coordinating the shadow box committee toward the end of November. Aside from these things, I have also been participating in everyday leadership activities such as setting up for football games, dances, and participating in class discussions.
Standing Committee:
Shadowbox Committee: During the month of November, I was finally able to begin creating the shadow box this year with my committee. As described in the special committee section in more detail, we successfully put up a compelling shadowbox committee piece for this year which was made to inspire ripon high students to show what they are grateful for.
Special Committee:
This month, I was in charge of the shadowbox committee for thursday. Inspired by the kindness video I participated in, I wanted this shadowbox theme to be Gratitude. I created a group chat and kept my committee coordinated as we took down and set up the entire shadowbox display in a single lunch period. The display included letters of gratitude from leadership students to people they care about and pictures of them giving them the letters. These were then placed on display for all to see.
Concern:
Once concern I have is for the scrapbook. Although I have logged into the account for the shadowbox committee, I still find myself unable to find out how to correctly place each picture in the exact area in which I want them to go. I also cannot figure out how to design the pages as well, but over winter break I will try to figure these ideas out.
Change I would like to see:
I would like to see more communication from different groups in leadership. After seeing that the class felt as though favorites were played in this class, I wondered if mingling with everyone else in the leadership class more often would be key to bridging the gap and understanding each other more in the class. There are many cliques which form inside the leadership class as well, so making the effort to talk to more people is also something that can bring us all closer together.
My Impact:
My impact in the leadership team has been mostly on the shadowbox committee. My efforts leading that committee made the shadowbox being updated and shared with the rest of the school. I also have created an impact in my school life through the dia de los muertos luncheon to which I created and ran through the Multicultural club. This showed the school's community that there is beauty in the ripon high school’s rich hispanic community.

Position Assignment:
As Historian, I have made great strides in making the scrapbook for this year. At the beginning of the month I began creating the templates and layouts of all the pages in the scrapbook. I also began working with everyone this month to get the scrapbook pages done quickly and efficiently. So far, most of the scrapbook has been completed on schedule and the pictures were taken for most of the events. I am currently looking for a few little event’s pictures for the scrapbook, but overall the book is looking good and is on a great path and I’m excited to see where this takes me.
Standing Committee:
This month, I have been planning out and creating a structure for the next shadow box that we are doing for the month of march. It is going to be St. Patrick's themed and talk about how we are so lucky in our lives. I will ask various students to say their luckiest moments and how they feel privileged in their lives. The meeting for this will be in the beginning of march and I am looking forward to changing out the old shadowbox from last year.
Special Committee:
This month, I worked on the Valentine’s Hearts committee creating valentine hearts for several students at the school. I especially liked this project because seeing the instagram stories and various social media posts about people’s hearts on their stories seeing how it made their day inspired me to show more love and gratitude to the people in my life. My other partner was Niki Nguyen and we got all the hearts done on time and completed a more elaborate type of heart. I made sure to take the time to place uplifting notes on each heart, draw on them, color it, and top it all off with glitter glue to give it that special pop.
Concern:
I am concerned about the scrapbook this year and its expenses because where it stands now, uncompleted, it is over $100. I am also scared about the end result because the years prior’s scrapbooks have been quite elaborate and beautiful but I am afraid my scrapbook will not measure up to theirs. I am also scared there are a few events that I do not have pictures for and therefore they will not be represented well in the scrapbook. This is mainly the Halloween Dance and the Tri Tip dinner (but I hope to get more tri tip dinner during the spring semester).
Change:
One thing that I would change out the leadership program right now is unifying the class. As it stands right now, I talk to the same people everyday and never talk to say the freshman officer team. I feel as though we should have an overnight bonding event, dinner, or some type of bonding activity to help unify us and get us out of our comfort zones. I think we must plan a complete activity for this, instead of just asking us to move seats (which actually does get me talking to different people).
Impact:
This month has given me many opportunities to impact the campus. For example, I have began working with Mr. Ramirez to create a Diversity Rally and International Luncheon on February 28th. This includes several games to play, things to discuss, performances, and a video to be shown. I have begun working on the video component of the rally first by talking to Elias to help him lead that and have created a committee to help with that. I have also created a game committee headed by the Vice President, Mattisan Romero and a Luncheon committee headed by Kate Villegas. I have also created a fundraiser along with the rest of my club to create Valentine’s grams for education in Kenya. This fundraiser was a hit because we sold out our candy bars and hit our goal which we can send to WE Schools, an international charity organization which will send our funds to Kenya to help build classrooms and fund schools.
